The undefeated Atlanta Falcons learned some bad news today as they gear up for their encounter with the Dallas Cowboys. Linebacker and spark plug Sean Weatherspoon will miss the game on Sunday night.
Spoon is the Falcons leader in solo tackles (40) and total tackles (52). He also has three sacks which puts him on pace to easily top his career high of four (set last year). One of Weatherspoon's strengths is his versatility and his ability in pass coverage.
In Spoon's absence, Akeem Dent will be playing more snaps and will get significantly more snaps in the nickel package. When Stephen Nicholas was out against the Raiders, Dent logged more time and at least one blogger wasn't happy with his performance. Against Oakland, Dent played every snap and had eight tackles. Nicholas should still be the Falcons primary cover man against the likes of Jason Witten but look for the Cowboys to try to exploit Dent's weakness in pass coverage. Hopefully getting on the field and getting the experience against the Raiders will help Dent in this game.
Solid play by the next guys up last night. Akeem's cross training during preseason paid off. Uhm, way to go Mr. Nolan, Mr. Koetter, Mr. Smith. Way to grind it out Falcons. You're 1-0 go get your next 1-0 in Nawlins. WE DAT!
Agreed. It wasn't a great performance by anybody although Nicholas played a hell of a game. Dent did look a lot better than he did in the Oakland game. Getting him on the field and getting game experience will only help down the road.
