Let's Talk Power Rankings

Written by Kevin on .

What is the most worthless thing in sports right now? I mean besides the replacement refs. Yep, you guessed it...power rankings. That being said, we all want to be the "cool kid" on the block and the one that everybody else wants to hang out with. So let's take a look around the internet and see just how "cool" the Falcons are this week.

Fox Sports = #3

Matt Ryan's 45 wins since 2008 are the most of any starting QB during that stretch. His 233 consecutive passes without throwing an interception also tops the current list. With those numbers it is hard to call this a breakout year, but that is what it will be if he can win his first playoff game.

ESPN = #3

Mike Nolan's defense made a statement against Peyton Manning and the Broncos.

CBS Sports = #3

If the defense continues to play like it did in the first half against Peyton Manning, watch out. Mike Nolan has them playing a fun new style.

Hmmm...I'm beginning to think these guys share a brain.

NFL.com = #4

Atlanta looks formidable, and certainly not like a team that went down 24-2 with barely a cross word delivered to the Giants in the last January's wild-card round. On a franchise history note, the fact that Atlanta has never blown a game where they were up by 20 points in the fourth quarter is remarkable. Eighty and Oh.

SB Nation = #4

Kind of like the Texans, it seems too quiet around this team. They dominated the Chiefs and beat the Broncos in primetime. With the Saints at 0-2, do we have a new NFC South king?

Rant Sports = #6

Atlanta Falcons (Last Week 8) – Atlanta held on to beat the Denver Broncos and look like a top contender in the NFC.

Let's be honest, it's good to be liked and right now we are liked a lot more than we were before the season started. That being said, it's a long way to the finish line and as we've seen in the past two years nothing matter except making the playoffs and making the playoffs playing your best football of the season.

It is pretty funny that power rankings create such a big reaction, usually negative, but then when your preferred team is at the top you rely on it as a reason your team is pretty awesome.

With that being said, I usually hate power rankings as being unscientific and opinion-based, but I love these rankings because we are in the mix with the top teams in the league.

 @mFalcons5 The thing is they are useless in pro football because of the playoff system. Rankings make sense in college because the post-season is based on rankings. It's basically just done because people like lists. They are easy to write and easy to read.

 @CFBZ True.  No one reads the entire article.  They scroll until they find their team then complain if they feel that rating is too low.  Or at least that is what I do.  I don't mind being predominately at 3.
